Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah is an American rapper actress and singer. In music, film and on television, Queen Latifah has won 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nods and has been nominated for the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, NJ. The daughter is Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Their divorce occurred when Latifah was ten. Latifah lived within the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah is a word that means gentle and gentle. Her mother gave it to her when she was 8. Latifah's 5'10" height allowed her to be a formidable forward at high school. In a school production, she performed the song Home from The Wiz. Latifah started beatboxing in the fresh rap ladies. Latifah is one of the original members of Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group of MCs around DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King recorded a rendition of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah following her hearing of the song. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
